New Sweden Day - March 28, 1-4pm
Join the New Sweden Alliance and its member organizations for New Sweden Day, a free, family-friendly festival at Fort Christina Park in Wilmington, the landing site of the Swedish and Finnish settlers in 1638.
Through historical interpretation, living history demonstrations, music, cultural presentations, interactive educational activities, and cannon firings, visitors of all ages will explore the story of New Sweden Colony, its encounter with the Lenape, and its lasting influence on the development of the emerging American nation.
This year’s celebration will include participation from the Ambassador of Sweden to the United States, the Honorary Consul of Sweden in Pennsylvania, the Superintendent of First State National Historical Park, and Dr. Juliet Wunsch of West Chester University, whose current and recent exhibits highlight the history of New Sweden.
Presented by the New Sweden Alliance—composed of regional heritage organizations dedicated to preserving this shared history—New Sweden Day invites the public to discover how this early colonial experiment helped shape the foundations of the country that would follow.
